Our mission
The mission of the Department of Foreign Languages is to educate the young generation able to effectively use the acquired knowledge in teaching practice; able to conduct a scientific research in the field of language and literature; able to create the right worldview, the competence in culture and the skills in intercultural communication; to introduce the students with the new methods and approaches applied in Western literature and culture.
Our Vision
The department’s vision is to create a vibrant foreign language learning environment dedicated to intellectual exploration and cultural exchange with an aim to develop students’ communicative abilities and research interests. Through foreign language teaching, service and research the department intends to serve as a bridge connecting regional, national and international concerns, eventually fostering an openness and sensitivity to diverse cultures in the sphere of language, literature, and associated arts.
The Department of Foreign Languages aim to
be the leading department to provide professional education in the field of teaching the language and literature;
educate the students in the field of language and literature topics in pursuance of the World and Western Literature;
serve as a bridge between Kyrgyzstan and Western academic communities;
provide the generation with the principal knowledge in studies of the language, literature, art and culture;
ensure the effective interaction with other educational institutions both in the country and abroad as well;
provide an area of high employment for the graduates in their future career;
improve students’ intercultural communication;
acquaint with cultural values: history, literature and geography of English-speaking and German-speaking countries;
provide training and practice the translation skills in the different areas;
organize adaptation-pedagogical, professional-basic, professional-profile practice for the students at secondary schools of Karakol;
partner and cooperate with the secondary schools of the villages.
History of the Department of Foreign Languages
The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 1959 as part of the Faculty of Russian Philology. Due to the growing demands on foreign language teachers and increase the students desire the department became an independently “World Languages and Communications Center” in 1998. On the initiative and efforts of a well-known linguist, Ph.D., professor Djusaev Djoldosh Djusaevich this center was transformed into the “Institute of Foreign Languages” in 1999, which included the departments of English, German, and French.
Currently, the Department of Foreign Languages works. This department provides training in the following foreign languages: English, Chinese, German, Arabic. The following teachers contributed to its development: Sadykova R. K. Karabekova A. K., Shakirbaeva Zh. Sh., Sharshekeeva R. M., Omurzakov K. I., Musaeva U.D., Asanbayeva N.T.
The Department of Foreign Languages teach specialists in the direction of 550300 Philological education profile “Foreign language” and 53110 Linguistics profile “Translation and Translation studies” with the assignment of the academic degree “Bachelor”. The department has equipped classes with relevant literatures of English, German, Chinese, Arabic and learning equipments.
The teaching staff of the department consists of 14 full-time teachers, including 2 candidates of philological sciences, 7 senior teachers, 4 teachers. Teachers regularly improve their qualifications in scientific and pedagogical fields both in Kyrgyzstan and abroad. They participate in various academic mobility programs and international projects, trainings and seminars, as well as partner with other national and foreign universities.

Advanced trainings of teachers of the department
Teachers of the department are constantly improving their qualifications: they undergo internships, develop teaching aids, periodically organize and participate in national, international scientific and practical conferences, seminars and trainings. Teachers receive information about new trends in the field of teaching foreign languages and exchange experience in teaching foreign languages.
In order to improve teaching methods, enhance the language knowledge and exchange experience, teachers visited India, Malaysia, Turkey, USA, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Greece, England etc.
Our teachers have participated in various international programs and projects:
According to the program of academic mobility Erasmus + associate professors of the department: Iisaeva A.Dj, Abdyrakmatova N.K. conducted lectures on the methodology of teaching English and open practical classes in German at the Aristotle University, Thessaloniki in Greece.
According to the program for teachers of universities “JFDP”, the following teachers Asanbaeva N.T, Nogoeva Ch.A., Iisaeva A.Dj had been completed for 5-months and one-year internships at the universities of USA.
Under the ITEC program, internships were held by: Sagymbaeva E.Dj., Zhumagulova F.M., Imanakunova I.Zh.;
The following professors Abdyrakmatova N.K. and Iisaeva A.Dj. participated the scientific internship under the program “Ernst Mach – Nachbetreuunsstipendium” and “Eurasia-Pacific UNINET”. University of Vienna, Austria.
“TESOL” – International Congress of English Teachers, participated: Iisaeva A.Dj., Nogoeva Ch.A. America. Philadelphia.
Nogoeva Ch.A. participated in the Erasmus Mundus teacher training program. Erasmus High School, Brussels, Belgium.
Imanakunova I.Zh. participated in the following educational programs: “Actual problems of teaching English” Moscow State Linguistic University of Moscow; “Training of trainers’ course National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, India; “Erasmus+ Global Mobility”, University College of Southeast, Norway; “Academic writing”, Batumi State University, Georgia;
Within the framework of the EUCA-INVEST project Koomanova V.K. completed the course “Investing in Entrepreneurial Universities of the Caucasus and Central Asia” at the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal.
Musaeva U. D. participated in the FLEPP (Foreign Languages Education for Professional Purposes) University of Essex, Colchester, UK.
Asanbaeva N.T. completed the course of the practical aspect of the English language “Intensive courses of English”, Moldova.
With the support of the “Nama” Foundation, Zhumagulava F.M. participated in the project “Roadmap of outstanding academicians”, Malaysia.
In 2022-2023 teachers of the department actively participated in international, republican, scientific and practical conferences, university seminars, and also held:
International scientific and practical conference dedicated to prof. Djusaev Dj.Dj. “Linguistics in the era of digitalization” at the IKSU. K. Tynystanov;
Within the framework of inter-departmental cooperation were held the seminar on the topic of “Neue (digitale) Technologien” for teachers and students of Kalm. State University after name B.B. Gorodovikova.
Provided the guest lectures and open lessons of associate professors of Kalm.State University after name B.B. Gorodovikov for teachers and students of our university.
Took part in online seminars and in the congress of German language teachers “Learning goals in the German language lesson” of the Goethe Institute (Almaty); Lecturers of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University took part in the seminar “Using new technologies in teaching a foreign language”.
Took part in conferences: “Scientific space: current issues, achievements and development prospects” (Anapa, Russia), in the IX International scientific and practical conference: “MODERN TECHNOLOGIES IN THE GLOBAL SCIENTIFIC SPACE” (Sterlitamak, Russia); International scientific and practical conference “Knowledge-society concept in modern science” (Volgograd, Russia), articles were published.
Participated in the annual conference of teachers, Long Beach, California, USA and JFDP, Washington, USA.
Our senior teacher was the Chairman of the jury in the regional Olympiad of English language. It was held among the secondary schools, gymnasiums and lyceums of the Issyk-Kul region for 10 and 11 grades of students.
Research and teaching in academic work
Researching topic of the department: “Current issues of research and teaching of foreign languages”
Currently, the teaching staff of the department is working on a researching topic: “Current issues of research and teaching of foreign languages” and articles, methodological and teaching aids are publishing. 40 articles were published in the RSCI system, 1 book “Methods of teaching English” under the stamp of the Ministry of Education and Science, 1 methodological manual “How to write academically” was submitted for use in higher educational institutions of the republic.
In the educational and methodological direction were provided the master classes once a month at the department, such as: “Using video in foreign language lessons”, “Using Drama in English and music in the classroom”, “How to write the introduction of the essay”. Particular attention is paid to new technologies and teaching methods, presentations, the new approaches. The methods used in lectures and practical classes.
In order to improve the quality of education, teachers use multimedia equipment in their classes, actively introduce interactive methods and try to conduct lessons at a high methodological level, with creative search and an innovative approach.
The department closely cooperates with teachers of primary schools of the Issyk-Kul region. Teachers of the department organize advanced training seminars for them using innovative technologies for teaching English.
According to small grants there were received modern literatures, audio and video materials in English and German by teachers.
Students’ adaptative-pedagogical, professional-basic, professional-profile practice at the secondary schools
According to the curriculum of the educational program of ISU all our students in the profile “Foreign (English) language” practice their adaptive-pedagogical, professional-basic, professional-profile practice at schools of Karakol and some villages. Between ISU and Karakol Department of Education were signed the agreement on cooperation and providing an opportunity to involve teaching practice in schools.
Translation and Translation Study’s students learning practice are completing in educational centers, organizations and tourist centers. During the practice, our students improve their translation skills, practical knowledge and gain experience in interpreting and writing.
Orientation conferences for the students are held before the practice and students receive methodological instructions for completing their practice.
During practice students use didactic materials, visual aids, apply new methods and strategies in teaching, draw up a lesson plan and learn to analyze lessons.
Upbringing activities of the students
The priority tasks of upbringing activities are:
Initiate students to a healthy lifestyle.
To form the quality of a modern personality, in conditions of multilingualism and interaction of different cultures.
Teach how to plan their working day, education in the spirit of patriotism, love their country, respect for the traditions and customs of the people, etc.
Educational work of curators is carried out in accordance with the curriculum of IKSU.
Curators hold talks, debates, various events dedicated to anniversaries, significant dates, etc., where students are instilled with feelings of patriotism, analytical, independent thinking skills, assessment of the modern world with a focus on national and universal values.
Teachers of the department regularly provide the cultural events with students: “Dedication to Students”, “Teacher’s Day”, “Christmas”, “Frohe Weihnachten” (Merry Christmas!) “Thanksgiving Day”, “New Year”, “Nooruz”, “ Traditions of the Kyrgyz people” and many others.
There is also a “Reading Club” for our students to communicate with interesting friends, express their point of views, and find people with the same views; they also take part in discussions. According to the club the students to increase their intellect, enrich their horizons and learn how to speak to the public or learn speaking skills.
Student activity
Our Smart Lab ISU students took part in an international student training seminar at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic within the framework of the Erasmus + project “Investing in Entrepreneurial Universities of the Caucasus and Central Asia”, internship of students abroad.
Students of the department took part in the international student project “Euca-Invest Entrepreneurship in Central Asia and Georgia Universities” at the University of Guimaraes within the framework of the Erasmus + project “Investing in Entrepreneurial Universities of the Caucasus and Central Asia”, Portugal.
According to the academic mobile program of students, Nagima Zhumakadyrova studied for the 6th semester at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece.
